Parts of The Brain
Using mistakes to create learning opportunities can have powerful results, if the method used supports the learner without judgment. When judgment is passed, the brain takes a detour through the emotions, and the learning stops due to the increased levels of chemicals in the brain from the perceived threat. Maintaining a balance of support and challenge throughout the learning gives the brain more opportunities. If mistakes are viewed as part of the learning process, a step to success, the learner’s brain is free to process the mistake as it would factual information. When a threat is perceived, brain function is interrupted for up to ninety minutes if the learner is unable to refocus on the learning. State changes, relaxation techniques, and a calm and supportive dialogue can aid balancing the emotions and focus during learning.
