Addressing by name
Addressing a person by his/her name has been proven to build a climate of mutual respect in the classroom. Research indicates that the audible expression of one’s name builds self-esteem. Demonstrations of mutual respect and common courtesy foster a calm and confident learning environment. Oral communication skill is a competency desired by employers as are poise, confidence, and courtesy.

Strategies for learning names

Use name tags with the first name of each student.

Have students use icons to spell each name. The letter that the icon begins with represents the letter in the name. This name tag is for "Sam."

Students can describe themselves using an alliteration.

Students use an alliteration but using an icon.
