Neck up check up

The attitudes and behaviors of the educator are the heart of the learning environment. Great Expectations educators model high standards, integrity, and lifelong learning. They seek to build a support system for all learners by developing a Culture of Respect. When learners are supported, challenged, and affirmed, they are motivated to take learning risks that take them outside their comfort zones. It is the educators’ challenge to help them find success.

One strategy used by Great Expectations educators is the “Neck-Up Check-Up.” The responsibility for the culture in the learning environment belongs to all its members, but the educator is especially influential. To keep a threat-free and positive environment, members must leave their baggage of stress, outside worries, and leftover aggravations at the door. Stress is detrimental to the well-being of the learning environment, so educators should look candidly at their attitudes and the behaviors they exhibit as leaders of their learning communities. Using the “Neck-Up Check-Up” will bring the focus back to learner achievement.

Educators should give themselves a “Neck-up Check-up” each day by asking themselves the following questions:

  • How am I doing?
  • Am I smiling?
  • Did I leave my negative baggage at the door?
  • Am I letting those things I cannot control, control me?
  • Do I need to refocus my attitude?

Educators cannot model success and excellence until they are consistently monitoring their own attitudes and behaviors.
